In 2016, the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR) funded three Projects for Translating the Findings and Products of Disability and Rehabilitation Research and Development into Practice to promote the use or adoption of findings from NIDILRR-sponsored research or development projects.

Published in The Campbell Library in January 2015, the review was co-authored by Carlton J. Fong, Kathleen M. Murphy, John D. Westbrook and Minda M. Markle.

BACKGROUND

In the United States, an estimated 1.5 million people are diagnosed annually with some type of cancer (American Cancer Society, 2011). Work is an important stabilizing factor for cancer survivors (Arnold, 1999).

The Knowledge Translation for Employment Research Center at SEDL and its partner, Virginia Commonwealth University, conducted an online survey of staff in state vocational rehabilitation agencies regarding their knowledge and use of evidence-based practice (EBP).

The web-based conference, "State of the Science: Knowledge Translation for Employment Research," took place September 16-17, 2014 to address employment research for people with disabilities and the best ways to get research results into use.

This one hour training will help managers, supervisors, and human resource professionals to learn more about cancer-related workplace issues, recent changes to the ADA, and how best to help employees with cancer and their colleagues maintain a productive, supportive workplace environment.
